How To: Best Methods For Water-Curing Your Already Vaped Weed (AVB)

I hope, unlike me, you hunted out an article to learn the sacred art of water curing your ABV (Already Been Vaped) buds before you decided to use it for edibles, cannacaps or the likes.

To clarify, I decided to make some coconut cannabis oil with my AVB with a plan to bake some cakes. I never even thought about water curing my vaped weed and what a disastrous oversight that was. In short, as soon as I added the warm coconut oil to the vaped cannabis, I could smell that it was a bad idea. Think, the smell of AVB, but multiplied.

No way was this going in my mouth. As a result, the plans to make my edibles were subsequently abandoned… for now!

I decided not to waste the oil and make some canna caps (Cannabis Oil Capsules), but even then I had the occasional horrible taste come up throughout the day. Not what you want!

What I will discuss

In this article, I am going to go over the 2 methods I know of for water curing your AVB, Both the CoffeePot and the Cheesecloth methods are tried and tested and you can skip to your preferred by using the table of contents below.

For the people that aren’t sure, I will discuss the pros and cons plus why I prefer the one I do. The, You can decide which is the best way to watercure your AVB

So what is water curing AVB?

In this case, water curing is when we take the already vaped cannabis buds and place them in water for as little as an hour to many days or weeks. I usually like to do it over 2-3 days. But, you can water cure for as short or as long as you want.

The longer you take and the more times you change the water will result in a cleaner taste when you extract the remaining THC.

You can also use this method to extract some of the taste and smell of your fresh cannabis buds. You might wonder why people do it? One reason is, it helps with discretion.

You can dry it out again and vape it, or turn into oil for your vape carts. You see, all of the good cannabinoids left in your AVB aren’t water soluble, so it is a great little tool for your handbook.

How do you water cure Already Vaped Bud?

The first method I am going to discuss is my favorite. The CoffePot Water Cure, In my opinion, this is the best way to water cure your Vaped Weed. I prefer it due to the AVB remaining loose in the pot, which I feel results in a cleaner tasting AVB in less time.

Generally, I will look to do things as efficiently as possible. However, I don’t mind waiting a few days for stuff to get done, particularly if most of it is just waiting.

The second and most common method is The CheeseCloth Water Cure.

The CoffeePot Water Curing Method

So what do you need?

AVB (Already Vaped Buds).
Large Coffee Press.
Water (Preferably Distilled).
Wooden spoon (something to stir)
Cheesecloth (optional)

If you want to dry it out again, you will need!

An oven
Baking tray
Aluminum Foil

The Water Cure Process

The first thing you want to do is, take your AVB and place it into the bottom of the coffee press. I have 1.5 ounces (42grams) of Vaped Cannabis in mine which is a quart capacity, or for you Brits, around 2 pints or 1100ml. 1.5 ounce was my limit with this size of coffee press.

Secondly, you will want to add in as much luke warm water as you can, definitly not hot! Roughly 2cm away from the top should be fine as long as you’re not going to be moving it about a lot.

Just remember, you need to leave room for the press to go down without the water coming over the edge. The first time you fill it with water, the AVB will swell so you will have to put the plunger on top and use it to push the material under the water line.

Then we wait!

Now the rest of the process can be customized to suit your time constraints. You can increase/decrease the number of days, and the number of times you change the water. I change the water three times a day for three days usually. If I do it over two days, I will change the water to four times per day.

Wait a few hours at least between water changes.

When it to changing the water, you want to push the handle of the coffee press down nice and slowly. The slower you do it; less of the product will escape in the water.

Once I get to the bottom, I like to press down quite hard, but not hard enough that I’m going to end up with a bit of hash. Ok, maybe not, but, if you push too much, you are guaranteed to get AVB in the water you discard away.

Next, you pour the water away, then refill it to the top, give it a stir to loosen it up, then let it sit until the next water change. It is advisable to leave your pot in a dark cupboard out of direct sunlight if it is the glass version. Unless of course, you just get a press like mine.

It’s worth noting. You will see during your water changes, that there is a good reason to water cure. The waste is disgusting, but after 2-3 days you will notice it starts to run clear. That’s when I figure its been enough time.

Finally

When it is time to remove the AVB from the pot, you can just use your spoon to scrape it out. You should have already removed most of the water, by squeezing the plunger down so it tends to come out quite easily.

If you are concerned about the little left over, Swish some water around inside then pour it through your cheesecloth and strainer. Otherwise, Like me, jump straight to the drying process.

The CheeseCloth Water Cure Method

So what do you need?

AVB (Already Vaped Buds).
Large Bowl, Jug, or Vase.
100% Cotton Cheesecloth

If you want to dry it out again, you will need!

An oven
Baking tray
Aluminum Foil

The Cheesecloth Water Cure Process

Now with this one, I took my other 1.5 ounces (42grams) of Already Vaped Weed and layed it out on the cloth, try to get it as central as possible and in a pile.

Next, you want to roll the cheesecloth, while keeping the Vaped Cannabis as central as possible. and making sure that all sides of the AVB are covered in at least two layers of Cheesecloth

You then tie it up in a knot then place it in your Jar/Bowl etc. I then like to weigh it down with a cup to make sure that the AVB is entirely covered with water.

After you have done this, wait a few hours, and you will see that the water has turned a nasty brown color. This is when I will do my first water change. When changing the water, you simply pour it away, remove the AVB ball and squeeze as much water as you can out of it.

After that, you loosen up the AVB in the ball, put it back in the bowl and refill with water. I then repeat this 3-4 times a day until the water is clear, usually 3-4 days with this method.

Once it has finished the water cure process, you can untie the cheesecloth to expose your final results. As you can see, it is pretty messy which is one of the reasons I prefer the coffeepot method.

And that’s it, You should have some nice clean AVB to use however you like.

So what do you do with the wet AVB?

There are a few options from here, but there are three I prefer to use. It all depends on what final product I want. The first is to add it into some coconut oil or butter into a crockpot and make canna oil or cannabutter.

Also, we can make some RSO, or dry it out again to save for future use. Firstly we will dry it out for the sake of you guys that want to see how.

How to dry out your water cured AVB.

Pre-heat your oven to 140-180F (60-80C) Take your wet AVB and spread it out evenly on the baking tray. Cover it with some tin foil, Then place it in the oven.

Now there are two ways you can follow this up, you can close the oven door altogether, or you can leave it open slightly.

Closed door

This way is the quickest, but can still take a few hours depending on the quantity of bud.

Open door

This way can take half a day or more to dry out.

Both drying techniques work, but I don’t want to stink up my whole block, therefore I choose to close the oven door and get it done as quick as possible.

If you have used any normal weed or you aren’t sure if it has been fully decarboxylated then you can crank the oven up to approx 220°F (105°C) for the last 15 minutes.

**Please note, whichever method you use, you will need to give it a mix up a few times to get an even drying experience.

As you have just seen these are both pretty simple ways to water cure your AVB, there is little mess, no fuss and above all, work a treat.

However, I done both of these at the same time with the same amount of water changes over a period of 3 days and the results from the coffeepot are substantially better.

To add to that, The CoffeePot Method is by far the easiest and cleanest in my opinion so as a result, I choose it every time.
